Research and analysis by Youssef Elkhayami · Updated 28 August 2026

A 98-page portrait hardcover around A4 size costs €67 at foto foto and €74.39 to €96.95 at the five other services we checked. Those are regular prices including VAT, before shipping.

The €8.99 photo books in price lists are real too. They are much smaller books with 24 pages. A useful comparison starts when the size, cover and page count match.

Photo book prices at 50 and 98 pages

We chose a common type of family photo book and found the closest version at each service. These four rules apply to every row.

98 printed pages
The closest shared page count to 100. CEWE and Pixum start at 26 and add four pages at a time, so exactly 100 is not orderable there.
Portrait hardcover
The least expensive standard hardcover closest to 21.6 × 28 cm at each service.
Regular list price
VAT included. Temporary coupons, free-page offers and member discounts are left out.
Book only
Shipping is excluded because it changes by format, order size and delivery choice.

The calculation is the same throughout: advertised price + extra pages × the published page rate. CEWE and Pixum sell extra pages in groups of four, so their four-page charge is divided by four in the table.

Why compare 98 pages instead of 100?

CEWE and Pixum start at 26 pages and add pages four at a time. That makes 98 pages orderable and 100 pages impossible for those two books. We used 98 because it is the closest page count to 100 that works for all six rows.

Extra pages make up most of the bill

The advertised price includes 20 pages at smartphoto, 24 at albelli and Fotofabriek, and 26 at CEWE and Pixum. Every page after that is charged separately. Across the five catalogues, extra pages account for a median 65.4% of the final price at 98 pages.

The practical lesson is simple: decide roughly how many photos and pages you want before comparing prices. The page rate matters more as the book gets longer.

Does a low from-price stay low?

Usually, yes. We compared the advertised price with the 98-page total for the 191 products that can reach 98 pages. Their price ranking barely moved. The Spearman rank correlation is 0.98, where 1 would mean an identical order.

A from-price is useful for making a shortlist. For the amount you will actually pay, add the page charge and delivery cost.

Can these prices reveal a profit margin?

No. A price list shows what a customer pays. It does not show the cost of printing, fulfilment, payment, support, returns or marketing. Any margin estimate from this dataset would be speculation.

What happens when the page charge is removed?

For each competitor product, we subtracted its included pages at its own page rate from the advertised price. The median remainder is €12.99. Seven products produce a negative result, including six booklet covers. That tells us the package and the later pages use different pricing logic. It does not tell us the production cost.

The seven negative results from advertised price − (included pages × extra-page rate). This is a pricing-model remainder, not a production-cost estimate.

How much does book size explain?

Closed page dimensions are available for 194 of the 198 products. In a simple linear model, page area explains 58.9% of the difference in extra-page rates. The fitted rate rises by €0.178 for each additional 100 cm² of page area.

59%
of the variation in extra-page rates is explained by page area in this model194 configurations; R² = 0.589

Paper, printing, binding, finish, brand and pricing structure account for the rest. Four smartphoto XL landscape products have no reliable closed-page width, so they are excluded from this calculation.

Why these five photo book services?

CEWE, Pixum, albelli, Fotofabriek and smartphoto sell photo books to Dutch customers and published enough current information to model the base price, included pages, extra-page rate and maximum page count per configuration. Together they produced 198 rows.

They are not presented as the five largest services. There is no current public Dutch market-share table to support that claim. Other sellers may be relevant; this edition covers the five for which the same product-level model could be completed.

Common photo book price questions

How much does a 100-page photo book cost?

For a near-A4 portrait hardcover, the closest fair comparison is 98 pages: €67 to €96.95 before shipping. Exactly 100 pages is not available at CEWE or Pixum under their 26-plus-four page rules.

What does a 50-page photo book cost?

On the same specification, €43 at foto foto and €45.59 to €58.27 at the other five services. A 50-page book is available in every row.

Which photo book is cheapest?

Fotofabriek has the lowest entry price in the collected catalogue at €8.99 for a 24-page A6 spiral book. In the standardized 98-page portrait hardcover comparison, foto foto is lowest at €67, followed by Fotofabriek at €74.39. Change the size, cover, page count, discount or delivery method and the answer can change.

Are photo book delivery costs included?

No. Shipping is excluded throughout because providers calculate it differently and some reveal it only during checkout. Add the current delivery charge before placing an order.

Do discount codes change the comparison?

Yes. Promotions change quickly, apply to different products and may require a minimum order. This report uses regular prices so the same rule can be checked for every service.

Can these prices reveal a provider’s profit margin?

No. Retail prices are public, but the costs behind them are private. The dataset cannot support a margin calculation.

A simple way to compare photo book prices

  1. Choose the size, cover and approximate page count you want.
  2. Calculate the book price at that page count.
  3. Add the current discount and delivery charge at checkout.

That gives you a fair total. You can check foto foto’s current price in the book maker; when another service has a sale, compare the final carts.
